Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan’s contract to be demoted by the PCB

According to one of the close sources of the Geo News, Pakistan captain Babar Azam and wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan find themselves in a risky position.

The duo of Pakistani cricketers might get demoted from Category A of the central contract with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

Particularly after Pakistan’s disappointing performance resulted in elimination from the group stages of the ongoing 9th edition of the T20 World Cup 2024

However, the pay scale of the national cricketers will remain the same, but a new and smaller section committee will be designated soon to confirm the central contracts.

At the same time, there are discussions that if the players’ contracts are canceled, it might make them play freely without any restrictions. In other words, the committee is planning that players could get an opportunity to play freely without any central contracts.

Also, the PCB is waiting for the report from two important persons — Gary Kirsten (Head Coach) and Wahab Riaz (Senior Manager) to use the information provided before making any final decisions. As a result, this in-depth review process has postponed the board’s official announcement to execute any further actions.

The PCB felt that it would be the best decision to drop a certain set of players from the next series and implement a few changes to the central contracts.

A disastrous T20 World Cup 2024 Campaign for Pakistan

Pakistan faced back-to-back losses against the USA and India in the Group A fixtures of the T20 World Cup 2024. A double blow threatened their advancement into their Super 8 round. Despite winning their remaining two matches against Canada and Ireland, Pakistan’s qualification hopes were destroyed as severe rains in Florida resulted in the abandoned match between the USA and Ireland. Consequently, the USA in the same group was fortunate enough to qualify for the Super 8s by gaining an additional point.

PCB Targeting Babar and Rizwan Demotion

As usual, Pakistan has been facing early exits from the ICC tournament and the news of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan getting demoted from Category A has speculated the discussions to a peak level. Although Babar and Rizwan’s salaries wouldn’t be affected, it would result in a dropped status within the PCB’s ranking system for the star cricketers. Additionally, the source revealed that the process for a new central contract system is in progress which will be finalized by a new and smaller selection committee.

Conclusion:

The possibility of demoting Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan from Category A contracts indicates the major changes and self-analysis with the PCB following the team’s substandard performance in the recent T20 World Cup. As the central contracts are restructured and the team’s composition is gradually getting reshaped, the PCB is likely taking a bold approach to improve the national team’s long-term prospects.
