BCCI Selectors Should Not Mind Giving Karthik Another Chance in T20WC 2024

Before the IPL 2024 tournament, nobody was ready to speak about Dinesh Karthik and his inclusion in the Indian squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. But, in the ongoing season, the 38-year-old veteran batter-wicketkeeper has become the talk of the town due to his exceptional performance. Fans and experts feel that the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) selectors should give another chance to DK in the T20 WC 2024.

Despite batting at the number 6 position, Dinesh Karthik is the 2nd highest run scorer for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) after Virat Kohli. He scored 251 runs in 7 innings (including 2 half-centuries) with an excellent strike rate of 196.09 and 62.75 average.

Let us figure out the challenges and reasons why Dinesh Karthik should participate in the T20 World Cup tournament based on his performance in the IPL 2024.

Challenges for Dinesh Karthik’s Chance in T20 World Cup 2024

In the wicketkeeper’s category, several alternatives are proving to be the top contenders in place of Dinesh Karthik, potentially acting as a perfect backup. Despite, scoring 251 runs with a strike rate of 196.08 in 7 matches, DK still ranks behind KL Rahul, Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant in the list of highest run scorers of IPL 2024:

  • Sanju Samson: 314 runs in 8 innings (includes 3 half-centuries).
  • KL Rahul: 286 runs in 7 innings (includes 2 half-centuries).
  • Rishabh Pant: 254 runs in 8 innings (includes 2 half-centuries).

Earlier, Dinesh Karthik was the part of T20 World Cup 2022 that was held in Australia. But, his poor performance, scoring just 14 runs in 4 matches, resulted in Rishabh Pant being brought in as a replacement in the middle of the tournament. When compared to DK, KL Rahul’s performance was much better in the T20 WC 2022, scoring 128 runs in 6 matches.

By the time, the T20 World Cup starts, Dinesh Karthik will be 39 years old, and it would be a challenging task for any wicketkeeper to maintain their body’s flexibility approaching their 40s.

Reasons why BCCI selectors should give Dinesh Karthik another chance in T20 WC 2024

Despite the challenges mentioned above, the BCCI selectors should provide another opportunity to Dinesh Karthik for the T20 WC 2024 based on his exceptional performance in the ongoing IPL 2024 season:

1. Most Runs in 17–20 Overs:

Dinesh Karthik ranks at the leading position in the list of highest run scorers during the 17–20 overs of the IPL 2024 by maintaining an impressive strike rate:

  • Dinesh Karthik: 137 runs with a strike rate of 253.70.
  • Nicholas Pooran: 129 runs with 181.70 strike rate.
  • Tim David: 110 runs with a strike rate of 209.80.
  • Heinrich Klaasen: 107 runs with 254.80 strike rate.
  • Ashutosh Sharma: 94 runs with a strike rate of 200.00.

The above stats prove that Dinesh Karthik has played the role of a perfect finisher by batting at No.6,7 and 8 positions for the RCB.

2. Scores in All 7 innings:

Here is Dinesh Karthik’s performance in his 7 innings so far as a finishing batsman against these teams:

  • *38 runs from 26 balls (including 3 fours and 2 sixes) vs Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
  • *28 runs from 10 balls (including 3 fours and 2 sixes) vs Punjab Kings (PBKS).
  •  20 runs from 8 balls (including 3 sixes) vs Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
  •  4 runs from 8 balls vs Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).
  • *53 runs from 23 balls (including 5 fours and 4 sixes) vs Mumbai Indians (MI).
  •  83 runs from 35 balls (including 5 fours and 7 sixes) vs Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).
  •  25 runs from 18 balls ( including 3 fours and 1 six) vs Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

3. *53 Runs vs MI:

During the 25th match of the IPL 2024 between RCB and MI, Dinesh Karthik’s half-century of 53 runs helped his team post a total of 196-8 in 20 overs despite MI bowler Jasprit Bumrah achieving a 5-wicket haul.

During the match, the Indian captain Rohit Sharma teased Dinesh Karthik near the stumps mic saying that he is pushing DK for a spot in the T20 World Cup. It becomes evident that Rohit’s mind is completely occupied with the plan for including Dinesh Karthik in the upcoming tournament.

4. 83 Runs vs SRH:

Chasing the highest target of 288 runs in IPL history against SRH, RCB lost their captain Faf du Plessis (62 runs from 28 balls- including 7 fours and 4 sixes) at 121 in 9.3 overs. The team still required 167 runs in 63 balls with six wickets remaining.

At one stage, it seemed that RCB would easily lose the match with more than 100 runs. Although the equation seemed impossible, Dinesh Karthik took just 35 balls to score 83 runs, by smashing 5 fours and 7 sixes.

However, DK was dismissed in the last ball of the 19th over bowled by T Natarajan. Despite, RCB losing the match just by 25 runs against SRH, Dinesh Karthik’s knock guided RCB to their second-highest total of 262-7 in 20 overs. Indeed, this is the highest total achieved by any team in IPL while chasing.

Dinesh Karthik, having scored 250+ runs so far shows no signs of slowing down and continues to impress with his performance in the upcoming matches for RCB.

As the BCCI is expected to announce Team India’s 15-member squad next week, it remains to be seen if Dinesh Karthik will be included in the Indian squad as a keeper and finisher or not.
