Shubman Gill is on course to break Sachin Tendulkar’s ODI record of 1894 runs in a calendar year. The talented youngster is currently in sizzling-hot form and recently smashed 360 runs in a 3-game series. He could be the one to upend Tendulkar’s record that stands for more than a decade.
Can Gill Break Tendulkar’s ODI Record of 1894 Calendar Runs?
Gill currently has 1230+ runs to his name from twenty games. He’s few hundred runs short of meeting and exceeding Tendulkar’s record of 1894 runs in one year. Shubman began the year in stellar style, blitzing to a 500+ run haul in January.
A stellar performance at the ODI World Cup 2023 will see Gill surpass Tendulkar’s record. Another series after the ODI World Cup also gives the player another opportunity to extend his grasp of this record. If he beats Tendulkar’s record at the world cup, he will have another opportunity to extend it with an ODI series coming up later this year.
How Many Games are Left For Gill to Break Tendulkar’s Record?
India are guaranteed to play at least twelve ODI games this year. The team could play nine (9) games or more at the ODI World Cup 2023 if they progress to the knockouts. A three (3) game series is also on schedule for India against South Africa after the World Cup.
Other Records Shubman Gill Can Break in 2023
Fastest Indian Batter to 1500 ODI Runs
Shreyas Iyer currently holds the record as India’s quickest player to accumulate 1500 ODI runs, but Gill isn’t far behind. With stellar performances across ODI games this year, he looks set to leapfrog Iyer’s feat and set a new record.
Shubman recently surpassed Virat Kohli’s achievement as the fastest player to score 1000 ODI runs in Team India. Smashing two long-standing records for fastest ODI runs will be a remarkable feat for the youngster.
Highest Individual Score
India skipper Rohit Sharma currently holds the record for highest individual scores in ODIs. The captain was able to record a whopping 264 runs against Sri Lanka back in 2014 and his record has stood ever since. India’s schedule at the ODI World Cup grants Shubman Gill at least nine chances to surpass skipper Sharma’s record.
