Can MI and CSK qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs?

The 5-time defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) still have 5 more matches remaining to enhance their chances of qualifying for the IPL 2024 playoffs. However, the Mumbai Indians (MI) under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy have been struggling and are uncertain about qualifying for the playoffs.

On the other side, the Chennai Super Kings have been performing well led by their new skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad and the presence of MS Dhoni in the squad keeps the yellow army’s hopes alive of entering the playoffs.

Currently, these two teams have a huge difference in terms of their position in the points table. It would be interesting to compare their performances and figure out the chances of claiming their 6th IPL title.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) Chances to Qualify for IPL 2024 Playoffs

Chennai Super Kings are currently ranked at the 3rd position in the points table, and you need to observe the below-mentioned data to understand their chances for qualifying for IPL 2024 playoffs:

  • Overall Matches Played: 9
  • Matches Won: 5
  • Matches Lost: 4
  • Current Points: 10
  • Net Run Rate (NRR): +0.810
  • Estimated Points to qualify for playoffs: 16
  • Matches Remaining: 5
  • Matches Required to win:

CSK began their IPL 2024 campaign by winning back-to-back games against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Gujarat Titans (GT).

However, their two consecutive losses against Delhi Capitals (DC) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) made them rank in the 3rd  and 4th position in the points table. Later CSK bounced back by securing dominating victories against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Mumbai Indians (MI), but it couldn’t help the defending champions rank at the top two positions in the points table.

Shockingly, CSK lost back-to-back matches against the same team Lucknow Super Giants and dropped to 6th position in the points table. As a result, the chances of Ruturaj Gaikwad’s led side to qualify for playoffs remained in jeopardy. Fortunately, a 78-run dominant victory against Sunrisers Hyderabad, helped Chennai Super Kings jump to the 3rd position in the points table.

CSK Upcoming Matches Before Playoffs:

Out of these 5 upcoming matches, CSK should win at least 3 of them to qualify for the playoffs:

Out of these 5 matches, CSK will be playing 3 of them on their home ground at MA Chidambaram Stadium (Chepauk Stadium), which is an added advantage. This season, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) has been the only team that has defeated Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Chepauk in the IPL 2024 tournament so far.

These stats highlight the fact that CSK holds the maximum chance of not only qualifying for the IPL 2024 playoffs but also winning their 6th title under their new skipper.

Mumbai Indians (MI) Chances to Qualify for IPL 2024 Playoffs

The chances of Mumbai Indians clinching their 6th trophy in the IPL 2024 season seem to be completely impossible as they rank at the 9th position in the points table based on the data shown below:

  • Overall Matches Played: 9
  • Matches Won: 3
  • Matches Lost: 6
  • Current Points: 6
  • Net Run Rate (NRR): -0.261
  • Estimated Points to qualify for playoffs: 16
  • Matches Remaining: 5
  • Matches Required to win: 5

Mumbai Indians began their IPL 2024 campaign on a poor note under their new skipper Hardik Pandya and lost three consecutive matches against Gujarat Titans (GT), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Rajasthan Royals (RR). However, MI fans still had hope after winning back-to-back matches against Delhi Capitals (DC) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

But, fans started to blast Hardik’s captaincy after facing a humiliating 20-run loss against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). It is because MS Dhoni smashed 20 runs from just 4 balls in the last over bowled by Hardik Pandya that powered CSK to a total of 206-4 in 20 overs. Despite Rohit’s century, a lack of support from other batters resulted in MI facing a 4th loss of the tournament.

Later, a 9-run victory against Punjab Kings (PBKS) went in vain as MI suffered back-to-back losses against Rajasthan Royals (RR) by 9 wickets and Delhi Capitals (DC) by 10 runs.

Moreover, Mumbai Indians bowling performance has been extremely disappointing. Apart from Jasprit Bumrah, none of the bowlers showed intent to grab wickets.

These are the teams that have scored 200+ runs against MI’s weak bowling attack:

  • SRH 277-3 in 20 overs (MI lost by 31 runs)
  • DC: 205-8 in 20 overs ( DC lost by 29 runs)
  • CSK: 206-4 in 20 overs ( MI lost by 20 runs)
  • DC: 257-4 in 20 overs ( MI lost by 10 runs)

MI Upcoming Matches Before Playoffs:

MI must win all these upcoming five matches with a huge margin to ensure that they qualify for the playoffs:

Date and DayOpposition TeamsVenueTimings (IST)
30th April 2024 (Tuesday)Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)Ekana Stadium07:30 pm
03rd May 2024 (Friday)Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)Wankhede Stadium07:30 pm

11th May 2024 (Saturday)Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)Eden Gardens07:30 pm
17th May 2024 (Friday)Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)Wankhede Stadium07:30 pm

Even if MI lose a single match, they will straight away get eliminated from the IPL 2024 playoffs race.

Out of 5 matches, 3 games will be played at MI’s home ground against SRH, KKR and LSG, which are considered the most challenging teams of IPL 2024. Moreover, MI have won 3 out of 4 matches at Wankhede Stadium this season so far.

Overall, it is the toughest challenge of the season for MI to qualify for the playoffs. The 5-time defending champions need to maintain a higher net run rate by winning all the remaining matches to secure the fourth position in the points table among highly competitive teams like DC, SRH and LSG.
