

A report from an American investment firm has revealed that the Indian Premier League IPL brand value is currently at least $3 billion. The company, Houlihan Lokey, which outlined the value of India’s premier cricket league, also rated the worth of several entities in the competition.
IPL’s brand value has seen a huge increase of about 80% from $1.8 billion in 2022.The current valuation goes to show IPL cricket growth as a global brand in less than 2 decades after its inaugural season.
In this report, figures also show that the IPL enterprise value has gone up about 80% to its current $15.4 billion valuation.
Other Details of the IPL Brand Value Report
The report also contains information about the various partnerships that have significantly boosted the IPL brand value ahead of next season. The report reveals that media deals with Disney Star, Viacom 18 are factors that contribute to the rising worth of IPL as a brand. These long-term deals are worth a fortune and bring the IPL brand value to a whole new level and a wider audience.
Houlihan Lokey’s Senior Vice President spoke to TOI and had this to say about the IPL:
“Created on the American style of franchise-based systems of hiring players, the IPL has established itself as a hugely lucrative sports league, along similar lines as the NFL and the NBA. Besides the exponential growth in brand and business enterprise valuation of the IPL and the franchisees, it is interesting to note the prominent shift towards acceptance of digital platforms for sports consumption.”
Houlihan Lokey’s Senior VP also talked about the main reason behind the IPL brand value seeing such massive increases:
“… This shift is evident in the remarkable viewership numbers witnessed during the current|”season on Viacoml8’s OTT platform, JioCinema. However, Disney Star’s television viewing numbers were also very encouraging this year, achieving record levels.”
Franchise valuation
The Houlihan Lokey report also looked at the brand valuation of several top IPL franchises to assess the value of India’s top teams.
Chennai Super Kings
From the report, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are the IPL’s top team in brand valuation rankings. The team currently has its brand worth estimated around $212 million.
CSK’s brand worth ahead of the new season is currently almost 50% higher than its 2022 brand valuation at $146 million. The 45.2% brand valuation shows massive worth added to CSK’s image since their latest IPL title win.
Royal Challengers Bangalore
Perennial IPL underachievers, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) sit in second place on the IPL brand value rankings. Virat Kohli’s team has always managed to sit high up most rankings in the IPL, even if RCB still doesn’t have their maiden title after many seasons. In the current rankings, RCB’s estimated brand worth is pegged at $195 million.
Mumbai Indians
The Mumbai Indians (MI) failed to earn a spot at the IPL 2023 Final but still rank high in brand value leaderboards. Winning a joint record of five IPL titles has done much to boost the value of MI over time. The current ranking pegs MI’s brand value at about $190 million, less than $6 million off CSK’s estimated media worth. MI’s brand value has gone up $34.8% when compared to last year, according to the recent report.
Kolkata Knight Riders
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) team continues to grow as one of IPL’s strongest franchises. KKR currently boasts an impressive 4th place in the overall IPL brand value rankings for participating teams. According to the report, KKR’s estimated brand value is $181 million, making it one of IPL’s highest in this ranking.
Rajasthan Royals
The Rajasthan Royals (RR) saw a massive bump in their brand worth more than any other IPL team in this report. According to the report, the RR team recorded a 103% growth in brand value, moving from $59 million to over $120 million within a year. Such an increase in value shows the impressive worth ascribed to many IPL franchises across recent seasons.
Delhi Capitals
Delhi Capitals (DC) place 5th in the ranking with an overall brand value estimated at $133 million. The estimated IPL brand value of DC makes it one of this league’s top franchises in media revenue rankings.
