The Australian pacer, Mitchell Starc in IPL 2024 makes a grand entry into the contest after creating a sensation in the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League auction.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) offered a perfect Christmas gift to Mitchell Starc with an expensive package of INR 24.75 crores.
An intense contest was witnessed between different franchises in the IPL 2024 auction, to secure the services of the 33-year-old fast bowler.
All the ten franchises together spent a huge amount of INR 230.4 crores to acquire 72 players. Indeed, the amount spent was higher than a decade ago. In the 2014 IPL auction, the amount spent was INR 262.4 crores, but all the teams bought a total of 154 players.
Kolkata Knight Riders paid more than 80% of its purse value to Mitchell Starc in IPL 2024. Usually, any franchise wouldn’t spend too much amount on any pace bowler.
Additionally, Mitchell Starc became the costliest player in the entire IPL history as well as in the IPL 2024 auction.
It all started in 2008 when Chennai Super Kings offered MS Dhoni the most expensive package in IPL 2008. Later, the transformation in the tournament took place rapidly by producing an expensive player at least in a single edition of IPL.
Shockingly, Mitchell Starc in IPL 2024 was priced higher than the team’s salary cap of INR 20 crores in the inaugural season of IPL.
Ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024, Mitchell Starc in IPL 2024 would like to make use of the opportunity and experience a full-fledged rehearsal.
From MS Dhoni in IPL 2008 to Mitchell Starc in IPL 2024: List of expensive players in a single edition
Interestingly, the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008 witnessed MS Dhoni as the most expensive player for INR 9.5 crores.
As a result, the overseas players, all-rounders, and power hitters started grabbing expensive packages in the subsequent editions of the IPL. Here is how the transformation continued in the previous years:
|Kevin Pietersen Andrew Flintoff
|Shane Bond Kieron Pollard
|New Zealand West Indies
|Jaydev Unadkat Varun Chakravarthy
Finally, Mitchell Starc in IPL 2024 grabbed the most expensive package from Kolkata Knight Riders for INR 24.75 crores.
After 8 years, Mitchell Starc in IPL 2024 makes a comeback with Kolkata Knight Riders playing under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy.
A conversion from a base price of INR 2 crores to the most expensive player in the IPL 2024 auction, Mitchell Starc fueled up the fierce competition between the franchises.
Initially, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals opened the bidding war by crossing above the 5-crore mark. Mumbai Indians (MI) were able to lead the contest only for a short time.
Later, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Gujarat Titans (GT) witnessed an intense battle when the current bid surpassed above 10-crore mark. But Kolkata Knight Riders were not ready to give up when the bid crossed the 15-crore figure.
Eventually, the clash between the two franchises topped the revenue of Pat Cummins, which was the highest during the beginning of the event.
Notably, Mitchell Starc during the bidding rivalry itself became the most expensive player in IPL history.
Gujarat Titans was leading with INR 22.50 crores. Within a short time, Kolkata Knight Riders sealed Mitchell Starc’s deal with INR 24.75 crores.
Compared to other franchises, Kolkata Knight Riders have paid too much for any fast bowler in IPL.
But, Mitchell Starc’s ability to bowl sharp deliveries with swing and scare an in-form batsman with yorker balls. Perhaps, this was the prime reason for KKR to shell out their expenses and grab Mitchell Starc.
Moreover, many fast bowlers struggled on the sluggish pitch conditions at Eden Gardens, Kolkata and Mitchell Starc proves his experience in bowling on such tricky surfaces.
Especially, Starc’s fierce performance of 3-34 in 10 overs, during the 2nd semi-final of the World Cup 2023 at the same venue, restricted South Africa’s powerful batting line-up to 212-10 in 49.4 overs.
Possibly, every penny invested by KKR on Mitchell Starc in IPL 2024 will prove to be valuable for the franchise.
Kolkata Knight Riders entered the auction with a purse value of INR 32.7 crores and were left with INR 6.95 crore in their purse after acquiring Mitchell Starc with a massive amount.
The remaining new players for IPL 2024 were bagged by KKR with the following INR 6.6 crores budget:
- Mujeeb Ur Rahman (AFGHANISTAN):INR 2 crores
- Sherfane Rutherford (WEST INDIES): INR 1.5 crores
- Gus Atkinson (ENGLAND): INR 1 crore
- KS Bharat (INDIA): INR 50 lakhs
- Chetan Sakariya (INDIA): INR 50 lakhs
- Manish Pandey (INDIA): INR 50 lakhs
- Sakib Hussain (INDIA): INR 20 lakhs
- Angkrish Raghuvanshi (INDIA): INR 20 lakhs
- Ramandeep Singh (INDIA): INR 20 lakhs
As a result, KKR was left with a purse value of INR 1.35 crores after the auction concluded.
Starc is not only just a pace bowler but also a lower-order handy batsman.
With the ability to bat well at tail-enders, Mitchell Starc in IPL 2024 can contribute crucial runs to enhance his team’s total score. For instance, Starc scored a fighting 16 runs from 38 balls ( including 2 fours) in the World Cup semi-finals to ensure that his team reached the finals.
Arguments may arise about KKR opting for two or three players for the same sum of money.
Ultimately, it is up to the Aussie pace bowler to silence the critics by delivering his best performance, and not succumb to the pressure of getting purchased with a high price tag or getting fatigued, after playing a continuous series against Pakistan, New Zealand, and West Indies in all 3-different formats ahead of the forthcoming IPL season.
