Robin Uthappa feels Ireland will beat Pakistan in the T20 World Cup

Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa predicted that Ireland is one such team that could upset Pakistan by defeating them in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024.

The Pakistan cricket team is placed in Group A among other participating nations such as India, Canada, Ireland, and the United States.

Recently, in May 2023, Pakistan struggled against Ireland in the 3-match T20I series and eventually escaped with a 2-1 victory. Also, the men-in-green continued with a shaky form against England by losing with a margin of 2-0 in the 4-match T20I series (including two abandoned matches due to heavy rains).

Pakistan and Ireland are scheduled to clash against each other in the 36th match of the T20 World Cup 2024 on June 16 at CBRP Stadium, Lauderhill, Florida.

Ahead of the tournament, Robin Uthappa voices his opinion in an interaction with Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin’s YouTube channel highlighting the performances of Pakistan and Ireland.

Robin Uthappa reveals why Ireland can win against Pakistan in T20 World Cup 2024

During the latest video chat with Ravichandran Ashwin asked Robin Uthappa about a particular team that could get beaten by Ireland in the upcoming T20 World Cup and here is what the former Indian batsman answered about Pakistan:

“Yeah! PAKISTAN! I was waiting to answer if you asked the question. The simple reason is that Pakistan has been one such team, especially in an ICC tournament, where they have always been disappointed by a certain team. In other words, they have always lost to smaller teams in grand tournaments. Also, their fielding standards have been inconsistent at all times, and we have watched it in the latest Asia Cup 2023 tournament. Indeed, Pakistan’s fielding has been less protective. So I feel that in any of these upcoming games, they wouldn’t turn up, and it will certainly happen. Also, a team like Ireland can certainly frighten them in the World Cup,” said Uthappa.

Robin Uthappa Praises about the Ireland Cricket Team Skipper:

Furthermore, Robin Uthappa applauds Ireland skipper Paul Stirling as one of the most underrated batsmen in white ball cricket:

“Here is my choice for today. I believe that Paul Stirling is one such Irish batter who is quite underrated. He doesn’t receive as much recognition as he deserves. However, his consistent performance in various cricket leagues worldwide and his effective approach to cricket is very brilliant,” pointed out Uthappa.

Possible players to make Pakistan Upset:

Ravichandran Ashwin asked who are the possible Irish players who can make the Pakistani cricketers upset and here is Robin Uthappa’s opinion:

“Certainly! The opening batters namely Andrew Balbirnie and Paul Stirling are the two high-quality players who can create a huge impact. Additionally, Lorcan Tucker is another solid Irish batter-wicketkeeper who performed consistently well. Curtis Campher is another bowling-all-rounder who has performed well for his team with both bat and ball. The fast bowler Mark Adair is someone who has done well with the ball in the past. Most importantly, if you observe the complete batting order, I feel that it is quite strong and competitive,” answered Robin Uthappa.

Robin Uthappa’s choice for Best Irish Bowler:

Additionally, Robin Uthappa prefers Josh Little as a core bowler who could make a valuable contribution to Ireland:

“He is the perfect choice. I mean Josh Little is the ideal candidate who can lead the bowling attack. Not only has he been impressive for Ireland, but also when he came to India to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as well as the other franchise leagues around the world. Although it seems like he isn’t very quick, in reality, his performance is very dynamic. He can bowl with heavy balls and grab wickets instantly. Moreover, the bowling attack of Ireland is pretty impressive,” concluded Robin Uthappa.

Conclusion:

Robin Uthappa is confident that Ireland’s batting line-up would certainly pose a huge threat to Pakistan’s weak fielding performance.

Earlier, Ireland qualified for the Super 12 stages in the T20 World Cup 2022 and defeated a strong team like England by just 5 runs (using the DLS method).

After the 2023 World Cup, the Pakistan cricket team hasn’t been in great form, losing the 3-match test series against Australia by 3-0. Considering the Twenty20 format, Pakistan lost the 5-match T20I series to New Zealand by 4-1 in January 2024. However, they were able to level the 5-match T20I home series against New Zealand by 2-2 in April 2024 and escaped from facing humiliation by defeating Ireland by 2-1. Pakistan’s recent loss to England by 2–2 poses uncertainty about their chances of winning the T20 World Cup.

The batting lineup has mainly failed to show intent in the recent T20I series, especially during the first innings and powerplay overs.

Finally, it is a huge challenge for Pakistan to analyze their weaknesses and get back to their winning ways in the T20 World Cup 2024.
