T20 World Cup 2024 Selection chances: Shivam vs Rinku, Shubman vs Yashasvi

The national selection committee is expected to confirm Team India’s 15-member squad for the highly anticipated ICC T20 World Cup 2024, with the announcements being hoped for by the end of April.  As the tournament will be held in the West Indies and the USA in June, it seems that the selectors are unlikely to give the chances to the young and inexperienced players. In such cases, either Shivam Dube or Rinku Singh might get selected and there might be a clash between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill to secure the spot among experienced players.

The ICC has set a timeline to reveal the provisional 15-member Indian squad for the T20 World Cup by 1st May 2024, Ajit Agarkar — the Chief selector of BCCI, and his staff members have a few easier options to consider by ensuring that every member of the team is eligible for selection.

Let us compare the performances of Shivam Dube vs Rinku Singh and Shubman Gill vs Yashasvi Jaiswal in the IPL 2024 season so far…

Shivam Dube vs Rinku Singh

Here is the comparison of both Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh’s performance in the IPL 2024 season so far:

Shivam Dube (Chennai Super Kings):

In 7 matches, Shivam Dube scored 245 runs with a strike rate of 157.07 and an average of 49.00. He smashed 20 fours and 15 sixes.

However, the Chennai Super Kings have used him as an impact player, which resulted in a lack of chances to prove his fast bowling skills and poses doubts about his abilities as an all-rounder.

Rinku Singh (Kolkata Knight Riders):

In this season, Rinku Singh has scored only 83 runs in 5 matches for Kolkata Knight Riders with an average of 27.66, which includes his highest score of 26 runs vs Delhi Capitals. Whereas in the previous season, he was the highest run scorer for his team 474 runs at an average of 59.25.

Moreover, Rinku Singh hasn’t got enough opportunities, batting at the 6th position and is yet to score his first fifty of IPL 2024. But, his strike rate has been impressive with more than 184.

Shubman Gill vs Yashasvi Jaiswal

Comparing the performance of Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal as the openers for their team gives us a clear idea about their selection chances for T20 WC 2024:

Yashasvi Jaiswal (Rajasthan Royals):

Finally, Yashasvi Jaiswal is back into his form by scoring an unbeaten century of 104 runs from 60 balls (including 9 fours and 7 sixes), which helped Rajasthan Royals conveniently chase the target of 180 runs with a 9-wicket win against Mumbai Indians.

Ultimately, his comeback proved to be essential for Rajasthan Royals in the ongoing IPL 2024 season as well as Team India for the forthcoming T20WC 2024. Out of 8 innings, Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 225 runs.

Shubman Gill (Gujarat Titans):

In 8 innings, Shubman Gill, the Gujarat Titans skipper, scored 298 runs with an average of 42.57 and a strike rate of 146.79. It includes two half-centuries with his unbeaten highest score of 89 runs from 48 balls (including 6 fours and 4 sixes) against Punjab Kings (PBKS).

Possible 20 Players for Team India’s T20 World Cup Squad

Here is the list of the possible 20 players (15 regular + 5 standbys) contending to secure a spot in the Indian cricket team for the T20 World Cup 2024:

  1. Leading Batsmen (6 players): Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav and Rinku Singh.
  2. Fast-Bowling All-rounders (2 players): Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube.
  3. Spin- Bowling All-rounders (2 players): Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel.
  4. Expert Spinners (3 players): Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravi Bishnoi.
  5. Best Wicketkeeper-Batter (4 Players): Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Sanju Samson and Dinesh Karthik.
  6. Advanced Pacers (3 Players): Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh.

Chances for other young players to be included in the squad

However, the performance of Riyan Parag, Mayank Yadav, Abhishek Sharma, Akash Madhwal and Harshit Rana has been exceptional in the continuing season. But, it becomes clear that the selection committee would involve them in the bilateral series rather than inviting them to test their talents in a high-profile tournament such as the T20 World Cup.

It would be exciting to watch if BCCI plans for Mayank, Harshit and Akash as net bowlers, which could provide valuable experience and exposure to international cricket.

The automatic selections for Team India’s squad include the package of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli along with Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav. These names will certainly considered by the selectors for the T20WC 2024.

At the same time, the selectors will plan for a left and right-hand combination batters, which was completely missing in the ODI World Cup 2023.

On the other hand, KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan have batted as openers in the IPL 2024. Till now, they haven’t experimented as a middle-order batter so far. Consequently, it becomes tough for the selectors to figure out their contributions in batting down the order.

Despite several concerns and criticism about Hardik Pandya’s bowling and batting performance in the IPL 2024, there isn’t any immediate uncertainty about his selection.

Most importantly, Yashasvi Jaiswal caught the selectors’ attention by scoring a century against MI. Despite Shubman scoring more runs, the selectors wouldn’t be ready to give up Yashasvi for scoring low runs in his previous matches.

Either Shubman Gill (GT captain and opener) or Yashasvi Jaiswal (RR opener) could get selected in the 15-member squad. Even, if both of them are picked, it would result in either of the power hitters being dropped, namely Rinku Singh (KKR) or Shivam Dube (CSK). Finally, it is a challenge for the selectors to include Dube, Rinku, Yashasvi and Shubman along with the veteran cricketers.
