Team India to tour South Africa for 4-match T20I series in November 2024!

Recently Cricket South Africa (CSA) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have jointly announced that Team India will travel to South Africa for a short 4-match T20I series scheduled in November 2024.

Also, the CSA Chairperson and BCCI Secretary Jay Shah shared their opinion about the upcoming tour.

This coincides with the second consecutive year for the men-in-blue touring South Africa after playing all three formats from 2023 to 2024.

Earlier, in 2023, Suryakumar Yadav led the Indian cricket team during the 3-match T20I series in South Africa, with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli rested after the ODI World Cup, while the current vice-captain, Hardik Pandya was recovering from an injury. The previous year’s T20I series concluded with a 1-1 finish since the first game in Durban was washed out by rain.

The short assignment for the Indian cricket team is scheduled between the home test series against New Zealand in October 2024 and their tour of Australia for the Border Gavaskar series in December 2024.

Most of you wouldn’t be aware of the fact these four T20I matches were the ones that were postponed when India toured South Africa in 2021. The main reason for rescheduling the shortest format of the tournament was due to the increase in COVID-19 cases in South Africa.

Opinion of CSA Chairperson and BCCI Secretary about India Tour of South Africa 2024

The CSA chairperson Lawson Naidoo, and BCCI secretary Jay Shah shared their excitement praising the talent of both the cricket teams:

CSA Chairperson Lawson Naidoo’s Ideas:

Lawson Naidoo expressed his thankfulness to BCCI for supporting South Africa cricket saying:

“Thanks for everything! I sincerely want to thank the BCCI for their constant support towards South Africa cricket and world cricket. Whenever the Indian cricket team visits our country, there is a great feeling of friendship and teamwork among the players. Mainly, the cricket matches are enjoyable and thrilling which makes fans eagerly expect the same for the upcoming series to highlight the outstanding skills of players from both teams,” said Lawson.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah’s Opinion:

Jay Shah highlighted Team India’s strong relationship with South Africa stating:

“Yes! It is a fact that the Indian and South African cricket teams share an in-depth and strong bond which makes both countries feel proud. The Indian cricket team has been greatly supported and loved by our South African fans and in the same way, the Indian fans have a strong support for the South African team. Moreover, I am confident that the forthcoming series will once again bring attention to the on-field cricketing excellence and provide thrilling and high-intensity contests”, said Jay Shah.

Conclusion

Several cricket boards across the world feel that hosting the series to play with the Indian cricket team is a financial blessing which is the same for CSA. It is expected the broadcasting revenue for a single T20I match between India and South Africa is R150 Million (USD 8.4 Million / INR 125 Crores).

Although India toured South Africa in December 2023 for an all-format series which included 3 T20Is, 3 ODIs, and 2 Tests, all were part of the 2023-27 FTP. Both the cricketing nation boards couldn’t find any possible option to conduct the postponed T20I series between these two sides.

India and South Africa have played exciting T20I cricket series against each other in the past few years, and out of the last five series, three concluded with a draw result, whereas the remaining two were won by India. This shows the competitive and equally matched nature of the T20I encounters recently.

According to the latest news, the tickets for the upcoming series between India and South Africa will be available on 19th August 2024.

As expected, the high-octane clash between the Proteas and the Men in Blue is expected to entertain fans to a great extent.

Interestingly, Team India will be playing with a new head coach in this series since Rahul Dravid’s tenure gets completed after the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. Most probably, the Indian cricket team will play this series without Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as it is predicted that the ongoing World Cup tournament could be their last T20I assignment.
