What does India need from the Indian Premier League?

The 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is the perfect tournament to identify the right talent for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Indeed, the IPL 2024 will play a crucial role than the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy to fill eight spots in Team India’s squad for the forthcoming T20 World Cup.

Comparing the IPL 2024 Schedule and the T20 World Cup 2024 Schedule, there isn’t even a week’s gap for players to begin their preparation.

It would be interesting to look at the possible certainties. Typically, any list starts with the Indian pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who is the core part of the bowling lineup. Next is the Indian captain Rohit Sharma. His opening pair Yashasvi Jaiswal, has almost confirmed his position. Especially, after the magnificent performance against England in the 5-match test series, Yashasvi has become a star cricketer.

Once Rohit Sharma is in, there is no doubt that Virat Kohli won’t be included. It is because the “Ro-Ko” combination (Rohit- Kohli) has been successful in many matches. Also, Virat Kohli’s talent to play against the high pace bowling and ability to chase targets under pressure prioritizes his place in the squad.

Suryakumar Yadav is the only batsman who can confidently begin setting together his paperwork for visas to travel to the West Indies and the USA.

If Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja book their place as spin bowlers, then 7 out of 15 spots get filled.

Selectors would keenly consider several factors during the Indian Premier League. It includes seam and spin bowling all-rounders, pace bowlers, wicket-keepers, and backups. At the same time, the selection committee would scrutinize the batsmen’s talent to tackle the spin as well as predict the ball’s variation.

Mainly, the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League focuses on the power hitter at death overs.

Seam Bowling All-rounders in the Indian Premier League

Here are the two options for the seam bowling all-rounders that selectors will look at in the Indian Premier League 2024:

1.   Hardik Pandya (Mumbai Indians):

If Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya proves his fitness after a long gap, he would be a perfect starter. However, Hardik has been out of action since he faced an ankle injury against Bangladesh in the World Cup 2023.

Also, selectors are keen to observe the kind of role he plays for his team in IPL 2024.

2.   Shivam Dube (Chennai Super Kings):

Selectors might give special preference to Shivam Dube based on his recent performance in the 3-match T20I series against Afghanistan. The 30-year-old all-rounder contributed his best performance in two out of 3 matches with both bat and ball:

MatchesScoreWickets
1st Match60 runs from 40 balls (including 5 fours and 2 sixes)9-1 in 2  overs
2nd Match63 runs from 32 balls (including 5 fours and 4 sixes)36-1 in 3 overs
3rd Match1 run from 6 balls25-0 in 2 overs

If Shivam Dube plays a crucial role for his team in IPL 2024 as a middle-order batsman and medium pacer, his position for the upcoming T20 World Cup will be confirmed.

Spin-bowling all-rounders options to consider in IPL 2024

Ravindra Jadeja is the only option as an experienced spin-bowling all-rounder. He can bat at lower order as well as produce variations with his finger-spinning bowling techniques.

3 Wicket-keepers in IPL 2024  who can secure their spot in ICC T20 World Cup 2024

Here are these 3 Indian wicket-keepers in the IPL 2024 who can secure their position in Team India’s squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024:

1.   Jitesh Sharma (Punjab Kings):

As a power hitter, Jitesh Sharma can secure his position in the middle order, but he isn’t a specialised wicketkeeper. Selectors would observe how he tackles the international pace bowling attacks in the Indian Premier League.

2.   Rishabh Pant (Delhi Capitals):

After recovering from a life-threatening accident, Rishabh Pant is set to return in the 17th season of the Indian Premier League. However, the national selectors would take some cautions before selecting him for a grand tournament like the T20 World Cup.

3.   KL Rahul (Lucknow Super Giants):

If KL Rahul decides to bat in the middle order in IPL 2024, he can enhance his selection chances for the T20 World Cup 2024 as a batsman and wicketkeeper.

This 31-year-old cricketer is an interesting option for selectors. He needs to recreate another effective performance he exhibited for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League 2016.

Indian Pace Bowlers in the Indian Premier League to get selected in ICC World Cup 2024

Along with Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj could be the other best option for pace bowling. Also, BCCI recently ruled out Mohammed Shami from IPL 2024 due to a left ankle injury. In such cases, Siraj could be the most promising option as a pace bowler.

The other alternatives for pace bowling include:

  1. Arshdeep Singh
  2. Avesh Khan
  3. Mukesh Kumar

But, these bowlers need to come out of their comfort zone in the Indian Premier League to secure their spot among many key players.

Batsmen who can play effectively against the spin bowling attack

Apart from Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who can play effectively against the spin bowling attack, selectors will prefer Shivam Dube, who played a similar role in the previous edition of the Indian Premier League for Chennai Super Kings.

Though Suryakumar Yadav is one of the best T20 batsmen, he tends to become slow against the spin rather than the pace.

Also, Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad have good records against spin. It is because they commence their innings with the new ball as an opening batsman and face spin only in the middle overs when they are completely set on the crease.

Power hitter against the pace bowlers in death overs

Rinku Singh is the perfect choice as the power hitter who can play bold and fierce shots against the pace bowlers in the death overs.

Specifically, between the 17 to 20 overs, Rinku Singh has been outstanding at this role and there wouldn’t be any possibility to keep him out of the 15-member squad. However, the final playing XI might change based on the experienced cricketers in the squad.

Backups To Find in the Indian Premier League 2024

Meanwhile, selectors will be planning for backup players with a maximum possibility of having four of them. It includes these cricketers namely:

  1. Ravi Bishnoi: AWrist spinner who can be an additional option for Kuldeep Yadav.
  2. Shubman Gill: An alternative for Middle-order batsman if Yashasvi Jaiswal secures his opening spot.
  3. Axar Patel: Best alternative for Ravindra Jadeja as spin-bowling-all rounder.
  4. Sanju Samson: Though he hasn’t been in his best form in recent times, there is still a chance to prove his talent in IPL 2024 as a batsman and wicket-keeper.
