Why Bangladesh Cricket Team always struggle in ICC Tournaments?

There are several reasons why the Bangladesh cricket team is struggling in the ICC tournaments which include poor performance in the bowling attack, inconsistency in the batting lineup and lack of strategic approach from a captain. At times there are huge ego clashes among the players which results in the entire team failing to make an impact in the rankings. Currently, Bangladesh ranks at the 8th position among the list of 12 test nations in ICC rankings since their latest performance in ODIs has been subpar.

Based on their poor performances in many grand tournaments, the Bangladesh cricket authorities are set to evaluate their strategies and remain focused on handling the existing issues that have affected the team’s performance over these years. It involves several factors such as overuse of the home pitches, difficulties in getting used to foreign pitch conditions, expecting too much support from veteran batters and lack of intent during the powerplay overs, which will be discussed in detail…

Bangladesh Cricket – Overusage of Home Pitches at Dhaka and Chittagong

Due to logistical challenges, the pitches have been overused at the main venues in Dhaka and Chittagong which leads to sluggish wickets and low-scoring contests. Perhaps, it has been one of the main reasons for Bangladesh’s struggle in international matches.

Challenges to adapt to overseas pitch conditions

A majority of ICC tournaments are conducted on a flat track that assists batters to score huge runs, which hasn’t been the fact for poorly equipped Bangladeshi batsmen. Their techniques and approaches have been ineffective in overseas pitch conditions.

Specifically, during the ODI World Cup 2023 in India, the Bangladesh batters succumbed to the opponent team bowlers despite having familiarity with the subcontinent conditions. Bangladesh has faced challenges in many ICC tournaments, especially on flat pitches.

Too much dependence on seasoned batters

One of the most common issues that the Bangladesh cricket team has been facing in the ICC tournaments so far is the over-dependence on seasoned batters. Also, the younger generation has yet to prove their worth as consistent batters. As a result, experienced and aged players like Shakib Al Hasan (37 years), Mahmudullah (38 years), Mustafiqur Rahim (36 years) and several others are burdened with heavy responsibilities to accumulate more runs for their team.

Also, several questions have been raised in the past about Mushfiqur Rahim’s ability to strike six or four at different batting positions. Every batter in the Bangladesh cricket team is unsure about their batting position in the next match as the tournament progresses.

Bangladesh Cricket Team – Weak Pace Bowling Department.

Despite having huge expectations, the Bangladesh pacers have disappointed in big tournaments, especially during the death overs. Earlier, Bangladesh had the most successful pace bowling attack after India and New Zealand in ODIs since the 2019 World Cup.

Moreover, the selection of Bangladesh’s core fast bowler Taskin Ahmed and other medium pacers like Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam, and Tanzim Hasan Sakib for the upcoming T20 World Cup raises uncertainty about their performance on foreign pitches.

Struggle during the powerplay overs

Tamim Iqbal was the only Bangladeshi batter who maintained an impressive strike rate during the powerplay overs and since his exit from the ODI World Cup in 2023, the entire team have failed to achieve explosive starts.

Also, the opening batter Tanzid Hasan hasn’t been able to convert the aggressive starts into huge runs.

Experimenting with the batting order

The inconsistency in the batting order has forced Bangladesh’s team management to experiment with unusual combinations. A huge imbalance in the batting lineup has posed difficulties for Bangladesh to either score huge totals or chase down targets with ease.

Despite having the best-talented players in the squad, the entire team has failed to convert into long-term excellence on the international level.

Earlier, the team management continued with the opening combination of Tanzid Hasan and Litton Das but later experimented with all other positions. Also, Bangladesh Head Coach Chandika Hathurusingha’s weird concept of transforming the all-rounder Mahedi Hasan into an opening batsman was just to have a right and left-hand combination, which seemed to be ridiculous, thereby making the entire batting unit completely unsteady.

Scheduling Series against Weaker Teams

Moreover, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) scheduled the T20I series against weaker nations such as Zimbabwe and the USA in May 2024.  Consequently, several questions were raised regarding how can the T20I series against the low-ranked nations build up a perfect squad for Bangladesh to perform effectively in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024.

Also, Bangladesh will play the 3-match T20I series against the USA, which is one of the hosts for the T20 World Cup. Although it helps Bangladeshi cricketers get used to the pitch conditions, competing against the weaker sides seems to be illogical.

For example, the Pakistan Cricket Team had sequentially planned the T20I series against New Zealand, England, and Ireland before the T20 World Cup. As a result, several fans and experts question BCB’s lack of planning for big tournaments.
